Current incentive spirometers have certain limitations, since their effectiveness depends largely on constant follow-up and monitoring, which can make patient adherence difficult. To address this challenge, the aim is to reduce that limitation through gamification, creating enjoyable interventions and ensuring long-term engagement. To this end, a remote-management web system for therapists and a gamified mobile app for patients were developed to support respiratory therapy during lung re-expansion exercises — in this case, the use of an incentive spirometer integrated with a digital inspirometer. The goal is to guide and remotely monitor the patient’s progress while motivating them with a prescription-based game. The system was developed following the XP (Extreme Programming) methodology, an agile software-development methodology.
